Enterprise

Enterprise projects are designed to enhance pupils’ understanding of the world around them.  Each class works on a separate Enterprise project through the year.  This year’s projects are:

Junior Primary

Once again Junior Primary took part in the Scottish International Relief Charity's Backpack Project.  This is a simple way of helping children from poor families in countries like Malawi and Liberia get to school: the Project provides poor children with things they need in school.  With the help of parents, children, staff, friends and TMS they collected almost 70 bags to send to children in Africa.

The class also runs an internal delivery service of Christmas mail.  This service is available for pupils and staff in school throughout December.

Senior Primary

Following on from last year’s lessons on pollution and recycling Senior Primary are collecting used postage stamps, spectacles, mobile phones and print cartridges.  These will be sent to charities which collect them. The charities will be chosen by the class.

The class also runs an Advent Giving Calendar during Advent.  Each day the children and staff in school read the prayer, look at the new advent window and donate at least a penny.  This year the proceeds were given to the homeless.  Senior Primary are also collecting toiletries and warm clothing and tins for the homeless.

They intend to run another coffee morning in the summer term.

Secondary 1

The class takes responsibility for selling poppies around the school and informing other classes as to why we sell poppies for the Poppy Appeal.

They will be taking part in an enterprise to endeavour to improve the pavement between the School and Fordbank school.

They have formed links with a school in Ethiopia, with pupils communicating by email with the school.  They ran a coffee afternoon and plant sale at last year’s Open Day and will donate funds from this year’s sale.

Secondary 2

The Secondary 2 class have been sponsoring a young man, from Zimbabwe, through Plan International.  Mgcini Mniki attends school and we have corresponded with him over the years.

Each year the class has to raise £144.00 to sponsor him.  In the past we have had sponsored events including a no sweets week, eat five a day week and eat a plate of porridge each morning for a week.  This year we decided to have an African theme party, we called it a Zulu Zap [Insert photos].  This raised £60.00 and we all enjoyed the dressing up and dancing and singing to African music.  We will have a quiz about Africa at our Open Day in May to raise the extra money needed.

PSU

The Post-Sixteen Unit classes run an Enterprise each year.  To start the business they have to raise £100 in order to provide money to buy stock for the tuck shop.

Each pupil has an individual job within the enterprise which they must apply and interview for eg Accountant, PR, Sales, Administrator, etc.  They draw up a business plan, visit wholesalers to purchase stock, monitor stock levels, set prices, package goods, advertise and sell within the school.

They also run seasonal events/sales to raise funds for their enterprise – usually at Hallowe’en, Christmas, Valentine’s, Mother’s Day, Easter and Father’s Day.

At the end of the year profits are split between the School and charities of the pupils’ choice.
