Occupational Therapy at Corseford
The aim of the Occupational Therapist at Corseford is, within the structure of the interdisciplinary team, to endeavour to promote and facilitate independent function, by encouraging each child to take responsibility for him or herself from an early age. This is accomplished by undertaking assessments of hand function, personal care, perceptual function, access to appropriate technology and social skills. Based on these, appropriate individual goals are established and treatment plans developed.
The older students are encouraged to develop their independence skills in the wider community by going out to shop to access local amenities and use public transport where possible. An Independence Week away from school is also an option at this stage.
The Occupational Therapist maintains contact with families and the Residential Unit to discuss progress and encourage continuity. Close contact is also maintained with the Community Occupational Therapist for provision of appropriate aids and adaptations at home.
